20 balls in 20 minutes

Getting the most out of a practice session is not always easy and just hitting more and more balls is not always the best way to get results.

20 balls in 20 minutes is a great practice drill that can help any golfer, but it might be of particular use to you.

Do you:

– lose concentration or focus when practicing?

– hit balls quickly and get to the end of a session not really sure what you have achieved?

– have a busy mind?

– struggle to meditate?

– lack a pre shot routine or have an inconsistent one?

– constantly try new swing thoughts after a bad shot?

If you answer yes to any of these questions then the 20 balls in 20 minutes drill is a must for you to try!

So here’s how it works in 7 easy-to-follow steps.

1.  Start off by warming up well and have plenty of swings without the ball to get loose.

2.  Then hit 10 balls with a pitching wedge or 9 iron to finish off the warm up.

3.  Now that you are ready you are going to hit 20 balls in 20 minutes…..but you can only hit one ball per minute….and no more!

4.  Go through a pre-shot routine with every shot.

5.  Change clubs whenever you want (but ideally after every shot).

6.  Change targets frequently too.

7.  Make sure you use your watch or the stopwatch on your phone to keep track of the 20 minutes.

I find this drill tough but it is well worth adding to your practice schedule because it can really help you to improve on the golf course.

Firstly you have to deal with the shot you have just hit (particularly tough if you’ve just scuffed it along the ground!) and 50 seconds will fell like an eternity to start with.

DO NOT BE TEMPTED TO HIT ANOTHER BALL QUICKLY BECAUSE YOU HAVE JUST HIT A BAD SHOT AND WANT TO HIT A BETTER ONE ASAP!

It’s a really good way to work on the mental side of your game and the routine you will use on the course with every shot.

When the 20 minutes are up use any balls left over to practice distance control with Wedges.

Good luck with this one and if you commit to it and add it into your practice schedule then I am confident that you will see the benefits in no time.
