Does your backswing fit your body?

How far back should you swing the club?

It’s a common question. What we are all looking for is a golf swing that repeats consistently to make a good contact with the ball and get it to the target.

Because we all want to hit the ball as far as possible, in an attempt to hit a shorter club into the green, then many people have a back swing that ends up being longer than it needs to be. Also, and in my experience, more commonly the lower body is not supporting and stable which leads to the backswing being longer.

For you to start to get a sense of the backswing that will fit your body then try this quick drill.

Get onto your knees with a golf club. Set your knees apart so that it feels like you are addressing the ball and make a backswing.

Pay attention to keeping the left arm as straight as possible to keep the width in the swing (keeping the distance between your hands and body as wide as possible).

You should feel your body coiling up and be able to feel a point in your backswing where you can’t rotate any more.

When you get back on 2 feet, try to recreate the feeling of backswing that you just had.

All good golf swings start from the ground up and this drill will help you to improve the start and coiling nature of your swing.

Most importantly you will now have a better understanding of the backswing that suits your body.
