Custom fitted trainers

Some of you may know that I’m running the London marathon in a few weeks and so have been pounding the pavement. I ran the Reading half marathon, which was good fun and afterwards my body did feel a little bit battered. On Sunday I ran 23 miles and my body felt completely shattered!!! I have had advice previously to get my trainers custom fitted, but I thought the pair of Nikes I had were fine!
So I went off to Alton Sports, which has a good reputation for running gear and I was recommended to try them for trainers. I took my old trainers (which have done almost 1000 miles!) and I was quickly told that they had run their last mile and they started a custom fitting. It basically involves running barefoot on a treadmill, while a camera films your feet and ankles from behind. This is done to see if your foot is stable when it strikes or if your ankle pronates or supernates.

It turns out that I over-pronate slightly (the right foot pictured right is over-pronating) so, a shoe with support in certain places will help me stop having to over-use certain muscles.

You will see below that we are doing a golf shoe trade in. Get some money back for your old golf shoes when you buy a new pair. I wish the sports shop had given me money back for my old trainers!!!

So this backs up my belief that we are all different in some way and should always seek out expert advice. Golf equipment is a prime example!

You may think you are not good enough or consistent enough to be custom fitted. Your body would disagree, because if the lie angle of your clubs is slightly out, the club is not going to be stable at impact and your hands, wrists, arms, elbows and shoulders will have to work harder to hit good shots. It’s also worth remembering that if you are a higher handicap golfer, you have to make more swings!!!!

What can poorly fitting golf clubs lead to? Innacurate shots. Higher scores. Inconsistency. Injury. Joint pain. Back ache. Golfer’s or Tennis elbow. The list could go on.

I also got fitted for new golf clubs recently. I’ll share that experience with you soon.
