Are you FIT for golf?

Here’s a recent article I wrote for our members news page on biomechanics:

“Are you FIT for golf?

The majority of you reading this, if you are honest, will say NO! Back Pain, joint pain, sore or tight muscles, tired over the last few holes, lack of concentration. These things all have an effect on your game and your scores and are the result of your fitness…..or lack of!

Over the years I have studied various methods of improving golf fitness and injury prevention. Golf biomechanics is now a part of our sport that is much more understood and is certainly a huge part of the modern golfers training regime. Certainly the world’s best golfers are now considered athletes and with the greatest of respect Arnold Palmer, Jack Nicklaus or Laura Davies have never been considered athletes!

So what can you do to improve?

Most importantly before getting into any real fitness regime (however easy or hard) you should first try to balance and stabilise your body to get your pelvis more aligned and release tight muscles. People that go straight into the gym and work on strength are lining themselves up for an injury at some point. Just say for instance that your right hamstring is tighter than your left. Every session at the gym could be making that worse and the end result could be lower back pain.

The answer is to start correctly. Recently I have been going to a Golf Biomechanics circuit in Basingstoke with Sarah Adams. I first met Sarah because she specialises in a massage technique called Active Release Technique (ART). She is also a CHEK golf biomechanic and we spoke about the idea of running a circuit class for golf. Well that class is now underway and happens on Wednesday evenings at 20:15 at the FitnessExperts gym on Viables in Basingstoke.

To join the class I would suggest you need a level of fitness as it looks easy but by the end of the 45 minute session you know you have had a workout!!!

If you have any questions about biomechanics or getting FIT to play golf then either drop me an email or pop in for a chat.”

This is an area that I have become more curious about again. I really think that a improving technique alone wont give the golfer what they need. Improving the function of the body at the same time will always give longer lasting results.

I am reading a few interesting books on this subject so no doubt more info will follow…….
