Play Golf to Learn Golf
The majority of people Learn Golf to Play Golf but I am seeing far more success with people when they Play Golf to Learn Golf.
Let me explain.
Most of us think that in order to play golf you need to learn to set up to the ball correctly, learn how to swing the club in order to get the ball in the air and control distance and direction, learn to putt, learn to chip, learn to pitch and get out of bunkers. I’m not disputing that but most beginners seem to think that they should learn all of those things before venturing out on to the golf course. This is backed up by beginners programmes that have beginner golfers spending weeks and weeks cooped up on the driving range.
A huge percentage of beginners will never make it to the golf course. They will either think the game is too hard to learn and be frustrated or struggle to find time to practice and give up before completing all of the lessons they have paid for.
A few years ago I had the privilege of spending a day with Mike Hebron (google him!). In my opinion one of the best golf coaches in the world. He had just written the book “Play Golf to Learn Golf”. This book is on my suggested reading list on my website

It’s an eye opener and over the last few years I have been working on incorporating some of his ideas into my own coaching. Most notably into my beginners coaching package.
I now set myself a target with every beginner to get them onto the golf course at the end of 2 hours coaching or before. I offer 4 x 30 minute sessions, normally spread over a few weeks to ensure some practice in-between. At the end of those sessions or before we are on the golf course. This turns the beginner into a golfer, they start to see how different it is to the driving range and fills people with enthusiasm to get back on the course and also to practice more. They also realise that perfect is not necessary to play golf!
Most importantly for the complete beginner they are becoming a golfer.
Most importantly for me I am seeing a complete beginner falling in love with the game.
Most importantly for the Golf Club they are gaining new members and the game is growing.
My advice to beginners is to find a golf coach that will get you onto the golf course as soon as possible so that you can “Play Golf to Learn Golf”.
