The acute pain in my left shoulder has gone. I went to see someone this week that works with Muscle Activation Technique (MAT).

For about 3 or 4 weeks I have had a niggling pain in my left shoulder. It wasn’t bad but just wasn’t getting any better. Following my wasted trip to the Doctor (see my previous blog post) I decided it was time to get it sorted.

I was recommended to go and see Johny Grigg. He has just opened a new gym in Basingstoke.

First of all Johny assessed me by looking at my posture and running a few tests. I found it intriguing that within about 30 seconds he said “there’s nothing wrong with your shoulder”.

It turns out that my right hip area is the area that is causing the issue with my shoulder.
It turns out that my Psoas isn’t working properly and in turn my glutes are not working particularly well either! As I now know both the Psoas and the Glute are massively important and form the ‘hub’ of your body.

After a few more tests Johny made the comment that all the tests resulted in a fail but the good news was that what ever he did was going to make it better!!!!!

He then proceeded to activate specific muscles and areas to improve the function. Now when I say activated I really mean push his thumbs into parts of my body to activate pressure points and certain muscles. My breastbone, jaw, base of skull and stomach were all in for some treatment.

I’m not going to lie……it hurt! Fairly unpleasant at certain points…….”this had better be worth it!”

The end result of the first session was that the pain in my shoulder was no longer there. Walking felt easier and I felt almost lighter. Johny explained that was because the correct muscles were working and not compensating. When I got home I certainly had more energy…..to the point where I even did a pile of ironing (I detest ironing) along with a few other things I had been putting off.

Lets not get carried away. This is not a miracle cure because the next step will be to train more effectively to keep improving the way I function. A few days after and there are signs of some shoulder pain again but only 20% of what it was.

I have got another session this week so will keep updating my progress.
