I have hardly played any golf so far this year. What with the poor and cold weather and heading off to Africa to climb a mountain I either have not had time or the inclination.
Don’t tell anyone but I am absolutely a fair weather golfer and the prospect of playing golf in rain or freezing cold wind does not excite me.
So today the sun came out and I headed to the range to custom fit myself for a new set of wedges.
Specifically the new Cleveland 588 Rotex wedges (I have a staff players contract with Cleveland).
So I set up our Flightscope radar and set about experimenting and comparing.
This year is going to be great for wedge fitting because in our Cleveland fitting cart we have all the wedge head options that we can interchange with different wedge shafts.
2 things struck me quite quickly with the new 588. Firstly, they feel great. Lots of feedback from the face which I think is good for controlling trajectory and distance.
Secondly, loads of spin! When I tried them with the Dynamic Gold spinner shaft my spin rate went through the roof and jumped by about 2500 rpm more than my current wedges. That was too much spin and meant I was losing almost 10 yards in distance.
In the end I am sticking with the same shaft I had previously, the Nippon NS Pro 850 but am going to change the lofts this year to 52 degrees, 56 degrees and 60 degrees. Previously I had 50, 54 and 58. Previously my 50 degree wedge was probably my least used club in the bag and so I think I will use the 52 more often and have more options.
Anyway, that one session on the range has really whet the appetite and now I can’t wait to get out on the course.
My advice is to get to your local pro shop and play around with the new equipment for 2013 to see if it’s better than what you have already.
