“but you’re not Jason Day.”

I was out on the range the other evening and got chatting to a guy who was practicing. Clearly he was working hard on something within his swing but was showing those classic signs of frustration when his efforts were not producing a repeatable ball flight.
He asked me for some advice and so I watched him hit a few shots, asked him what he was working on and then put him on camera.
When I asked him what he was working on he gave me his explanation and then qualified it with “because that is what Jason Day does!”
Jason day
My response…….”but you’re not Jason Day”.
There are many things that a golfer can do to get the club back to the ball and hit the ball to the target but what we all want to achieve is a golf swing that is repeatable and gives us a high level of consistency.
It is always useful to look at the world’s best to see what they do well and there are things that we can copy… but you have to be ABLE to copy it! Even more importantly, it has to fit in your golf swing and your body has to be able to support it. There is always a relationship between the club and the body. The body plays a big part in where the club can swing and we all have physical limitations.
In my own game, my tendency is to swing the club on a slightly shallower plane on the way in to impact. If I lose posture in the downswing then I tend to get too shallow and hit a push. I therefore work on things that will make the club work steeper into impact, rather than trying to copy other golfers’ movements that are unrelated to impact.
If you copy a bit of Rory McIlroy, then add a bit of Jason Day with a twist of Jordan Speith then you might get very lucky. On the other hand you could have 3 movements in your golf swing that will not work together and implode!
I think it is important to have a better understanding of your own strengths and what happens when you play well. You also need to know what your body will allow you to do with the club. If you relate that to your own realistic goals then you have something very achievable to work on.
