Are your feet ruining your golf swing?

I consistently say that ‘you can’t fire a cannon from a canoe’ because a golf swing needs balance and stability. It is the oxygen of your golf game!

The golf swing works from the ground up. In order for the sequence of your golf swing to be correct your feet and ankles must be relaxed and mobile.

If your toes are gripping the ground while you swing or even if you have tight arches then you will be over using your knees and hips.

Here’s something that you can try to see if your feet and ankles are mobile.

Stand upright with your feet together, turn your whole body like you want to see what is behind you. If you feel any tightness in the knees, hips or back, most likely you are not turning from the feet.  You should feel the entire sole of your feet with the toes relaxed.

The weight on the feet should be evenly distributed from the heels to toes. The ankles should feel relaxed so they can turn slightly as you rotate. Lack of movement in the feet can result in an overuse in the knees, hips and lower back or over time create joint pain or arthritis in knees or hips.

If your feet and ankles are not working then there are exercises that you can do to release them and improve your golf swing.
